The Getty Villa
Built as the palatial home of oilman J. Paul Getty in 1974, Getty Villa was recently reopened to the public after an 8-year, $275 million renovation.
Located in Pacific Palisades just 6.3 miles from our hotel in Santa Monica, Getty Villa offers commanding views of the Pacific Ocean from atop the bluffs of Malibu. The Villa was patterned after a first-century Roman country house, the Villa dei Papiri in Herculaneum, Italy, and the revitalization remains true to its original design.
The charming Roman-inspired architecture of The Villa provides the perfect venue to house the Getty Museum’s permanent collection of Greek, Roman and Etruscan artifacts dating from 6500 B.C. to A.D. 400. Peruse more than 1,200 works throughout 23 themed galleries in addition to five galleries of temporary exhibitions. The Villa also features a 450-seat open-air theater and kid-centric activities in the Family Forum.
